What Makes You Tick

Underneath the wish to be seen is a stranger wish: to be moved, and to move people, in the same breath. You don't perform to win applause so much as to find out what's true, and what's true for you almost always arrives as a feeling before it arrives as a thought. You're chasing a story big enough to disappear into while somehow still being its author. That's the whole arrangement.

Most days this looks like generosity. You give people your full attention, your warmth, your version of events told a little larger than life because that's how it felt to you. But there's a quieter question running underneath all the shine, one you rarely say out loud: what is this for? Not the applause, the actual purpose. You suspect that glowing for its own sake is hollow, and you're right. You're organizing your life around finding something worth serving with all that light, some current bigger than your own name that you can pour yourself into without disappearing.

That tension, between wanting to be the center and wanting to be absorbed into something vast, is the engine. It never fully resolves. It isn't supposed to.

The You Everyone Meets

People experience you as warm, a little theatrical, easy to love in a room. You laugh generously, you notice people, you make things feel more vivid just by narrating them well. There's a softness under the performance too, an openness that reads as sensitivity rather than ego, which is part of why people forgive you things they wouldn't forgive a colder kind of showman.

But ask you something concrete when you're mid-feeling and watch the edges blur. You'll answer with a mood, a metaphor, a story about how it felt rather than what happened. People sense there's more going on behind your eyes than you're saying, and they're right, though half the time you don't know what it is either. You come across lit up and slightly elsewhere, both at once.

Your Blind Spots

You dress up your own confusion so it looks like conviction. When you don't actually know what you feel, you'll perform certainty rather than sit in the not-knowing, and you're good enough at it that people believe you, which means you sometimes believe you too. Watch for the moments you're narrating your own life more than living it.

The harder truth: you use fantasy the way other people use anger, as an exit. When the applause thins or the story stops going your way, you don't fight, you drift, into daydream, into a better version of events, into the next audience who hasn't gotten tired of you yet. It feels like grace. It's sometimes avoidance wearing a crown.

What You Need (Even If You'd Never Admit It)

You need real witnesses, not crowds. One or two people who watch you closely enough to notice when the performance is covering for something, and love you enough to say so gently. You need water, actual water if possible, and time alone near it, because your nervous system settles near something larger than itself in a way applause never quite achieves.

You also need permission to be unfinished in public. A project you're still figuring out, a feeling you can't yet name out loud, an audience willing to watch you fumble. That kind of safety does more for you than any ovation.

Advice for the Road

Finish the thing before you go looking for the mirror. Let yourself be confused in private before you perform clarity in public, even if it costs you a little shine in the short term. And ask the Grail question honestly, out loud, to someone who knows you: what is all this light actually for? You won't drown by asking. You'll drown by refusing to.
