What Makes You Tick

You are organizing your life around an idea that arrived fully formed, one you didn't ask for and can't put down. It might be a cause, a theory, a way of living that seems obvious to you and inexplicable to everyone else. You are not chasing approval. You are chasing the moment when the thing you see so clearly finally becomes visible to somebody else too.

Most people have some other sign in the mix to slow this down, to make them check in with the room before they say the strange thing out loud. You don't have that buffer. What strikes you as insight, you feel as insight, and you say out loud as insight, all in roughly the same instant. This makes you fast and it makes you fixed. Once the vision locks in, it's load bearing. Arguing with you about it can feel like arguing with a doctrine, mostly because to you it isn't an opinion, it's something closer to a discovered law.

Underneath the ideas is a real tenderness about humanity in general that you rarely aim at any one person in particular. You want to help the species. Individuals sometimes have to wait their turn.

The You Everyone Meets

People clock you as smart within about ninety seconds, and slightly unreachable within about three minutes. You don't perform warmth you don't feel, and you don't disguise the fact that you're often somewhere else, turning a problem over. This reads as cool. It isn't meant to. It's concentration.

What you offer freely, more freely than most signs manage, is a kind of flat democratic friendliness. You'll talk to anyone as an equal, tell them what you actually think, skip the small talk that exists to keep things comfortable. Some people find this a relief. Others find it unnerving, because you're not adjusting your face to match theirs, and they can't tell if you like them or if you'd say the same thing to a stranger on a bus. Often the answer is both.

Your Blind Spots

You mistake your certainty for objectivity more often than you'd like to hear confirmed. Because the insight arrives feeling like revelation, you rarely stop to ask whether it might just be a strong opinion having a good day. With nothing in the chart to argue you down or slow you up, you can get stuck in a version of an idea long after the evidence has moved on, and call it principle.

You also outsource intimacy to the group. You're genuinely at ease with humanity, with a room full of near strangers, with the concept of friendship itself. One specific person needing you specifically, at an inconvenient hour, for something that isn't an interesting problem, is where you get cagey. You'll show up for the cause faster than you'll show up for the individual standing in front of you, and you know this, even if you'd rather discuss the cause instead.

What You Need (Even If You'd Never Admit It)

You need people who will disagree with you without punishing you for it, because you have almost no internal mechanism telling you when the beat you're marching to has drifted from insight into just being contrary. Friends who'll say that's a bit much, even to you, are doing you a real service, and you should keep the ones who do close.

You also need somewhere to be unremarkable. Not admired, not consulted, not interesting. A room where nobody wants your take on anything restores something in you that constant recognition never will, mostly because it lets the noise in your head go quiet for a while.

Advice for the Road

Let one person all the way in before you let the whole species in, and notice if that's harder. Ask your strongest conviction one honest question a week, the way you'd interrogate anyone else's certainty, and actually wait for the answer instead of restating the premise louder.
