What Makes You Tick

You need a small number of people who've seen the parts of you that don't perform well and stayed anyway. Not the room, the room is easy for you. The two or three people who know you disappear sometimes and don't take it personally. Real friendship, not the audience, is what actually feeds you, no matter how good you are at working a crowd.

You also need unstructured time that looks like nothing to anyone watching. Water, actual or otherwise. Music with no lyrics. A walk with no destination. This isn't self-indulgence, it's how the signals get through clearly enough for you to trust them later, in daylight, in front of other people.

Advice for the Road

Pick one person and let them see the version of you that isn't performing, on purpose, before you're desperate enough that it happens by accident. Write the vision down before you trust it completely, ideas that survive the page usually survive contact with people who love you but don't automatically agree with you. And when you feel the pull to vanish, name it out loud to someone instead of just going. The mission can wait five more minutes for you to be known.
