What Makes You Tick

You're chasing something bigger than any one fact, one country, one relationship can hold, and you call it truth or meaning or the next great thing, but what you're really doing is running from the possibility that there's nothing behind the curtain at all. The arrow flies because stopping means finding out. Underneath that forward motion, though, is a current that has nothing to do with conquest. You don't just want to know things, you want to dissolve into them, to feel the ocean under the facts. So the quest isn't really outward. It's an attempt to get close enough to something formless that you can finally stop asking.

This makes you a strange kind of seeker: loud about your convictions, soft about your certainty. You'll argue for an idea passionately and privately doubt every word of it an hour later, because some part of you knows that reason was never going to be the thing that saved you. What you're organizing your life around is a reunion, not an answer. You're trying to get back to something you can't name, using every subject, border, and person as a stepping stone.

The cheerfulness is real, but it's also a kind of armor against how much you actually feel. People see the optimist. They don't always see that the optimism is load bearing.

The You Everyone Meets

You show up curious, quick, and easy to talk to. You ask questions like you mean them, because you do, and you can hold six conversations in your head while having a seventh out loud. People leave you thinking you're the most interested person they've met, and for that hour, you were. This is the gift and the disguise. Your talk moves so fast that most people never clock the undertow beneath it, the part of you that's already grieving the conversation before it's over, that feels far more than the chatter lets on.

You come across light. You're rarely light all the way through.

Your Blind Spots

You mistake motion for progress. Leaving a place, a person, a belief before it gets uncomfortable feels like freedom, and sometimes it is, but often it's just you avoiding the moment where you'd have to feel something all the way through without narrating your way out of it. You talk around feelings you haven't processed by turning them into ideas, theories, jokes, plans for the next trip. It works. It also means you rarely finish anything long enough to find out if the thing was ever going to satisfy you, and you already suspect this.

You also tell yourself stories faster than you can check whether they're true. Your own cleverness can talk you into believing whatever version of events lets you keep moving. The people closest to you have caught you doing this. You know they have.

What You Need (Even If You'd Never Admit It)

You need someone or something that doesn't require you to perform certainty, a place where half-formed feelings can sit on the table unresolved without anyone rushing you to conclude them. Water helps, literally and otherwise: time near it, alone, with no destination attached. You need at least one relationship anchored enough that your restlessness doesn't get to have the final vote, someone tied to you the way the two fish are tied, so your motion doesn't quietly become escape. You will resist this. Let it happen anyway.

Advice for the Road

Finish something. Pick one quest, one relationship, one belief, and stay past the point where you'd normally start eyeing the exit, not because leaving is wrong but because you've never actually found out what's on the other side of staying. When the feeling comes, let it sit for a full minute before you turn it into a story. You'll survive the minute. You always do.
