You also need actual room to roam, physically or intellectually, some open question you're chasing that has no deadline and no one grading it. Not for the fun of it. Because the chase is where you stop auditing and start living.

Let something be true before you've finished checking it. Not everything requires a full investigation, and the people worth keeping will survive you having an unexamined feeling about them for once. Say the real thing sooner, before it's been drafted into something reasonable. And pick your one true audience, the one you'll actually tell the unflattering version to, instead of performing curiosity for everyone else.
