What Makes You Tick

You need to be seen, that part is non-negotiable, but you need to be seen doing something that matters more than you do. Straight vanity bores you almost as fast as it satisfies you. What actually drives you is the chance to stand in front of people with an idea, a vision, a plan for how things should work, and watch it land. The applause is nice. The applause for the right reason is the whole game.

Underneath the warmth and the performance is a colder, more analytical engine than anyone expects from someone this magnetic. You are gathering data on humanity even while you charm it. You want to lead, but you want to lead toward something, some improved version of how people treat each other, and you get restless with plain glory-seeking once you notice it's just glory.

The tension you're always negotiating is between wanting to be adored and refusing to need anyone's approval to know you're right. You'll perform your heart out and then act baffled that anyone thought you needed the reaction.

The You Everyone Meets

People experience you as warm, funny, generous with attention, the one who lights up a gathering without visibly trying. You give good eye contact. You remember what people said last time. It reads as intimacy.

But there's a remove underneath the warmth that sharp people eventually clock. You're friendly with everyone and truly close to almost no one. You're already three steps ahead, running the room and the idea simultaneously, half-present even at your most charming. People leave your company feeling delighted and slightly unsure whether they actually met you.

Your Blind Spots

You crave being loved and recoil the moment it turns into being needed. You'll perform generosity beautifully and then feel ambushed when someone expects follow-through, texture, the boring maintenance of an actual relationship. You tell yourself you don't care what people think while quietly tracking the room's reaction to everything you do.

Friends, specifically, not family, not fans, not followers. People who like your strange ideas and don't require you to be warm on command. You need permission to be odd and unimpressive sometimes without losing your footing. A cause bigger than your own reflection helps enormously, it gives the performance somewhere to go besides back to you. And you need real solitude on a regular basis, not to sulk, but to let the visions sort themselves out without an audience deciding what they mean.

Advice for the Road

Pick a cause you actually believe in and let your showmanship serve it, not the other way around. Let at least one person see you without the lights on. Stop testing whether people love the idea or the person behind it, just ask them, they'll probably tell you it's both.
