Taurus

Taurus The Bull. The first Earth Sign. We go from the eruption of Spring to the stabilizing truth of established incarnation. The transition would seem almost jarring if it wasn't so perfect, so necessary, so inevitable. It is the nature of Taurus to be steady. To sit and enjoy the grass and enjoy the feeling of the sun on your skin. Taurus is the sign which tells you to stay and pay attention. Listen to the birds. Smell the flowers.

Taurus represents the physical sensation of the World. It is our soul's recognition of the Other. Taurus is ruled by Venus for this reason. Venus represents this very function and is the ultimate receptive principle as a result. Taureans are sensual by nature, are nature lovers by birthright, and don’t just have a taste for the finer things in life, but have a taste for life itself. Their reputation for laziness is only a symptom of their constitutional contentedness. Wherever Taurus shows up in your chart you will find a drive towards peace, the pull to pause, the attraction of sitting, sensing and savoring the glorious panoply of it all. That's what makes it so hard to get off the couch!

Taureans are notoriously stubborn as well. But they are also steadfast, loyal and stable. They are drawn to money and material comforts and make excellent lovers.

Myth The myth of Taurus can be found in the story of King Minos of ancient Greece. He was himself a Taurean, the son of Zeus incarnated as a Bull, and vied with his brothers for supremacy of Crete. He prayed to Poseidon to send him a Bull from the sea as a sign that he should rule and promised to sacrifice the animal upon the delivery of his crown. But the white bull which emerged was so beautiful that he reneged and kept it for himself. He tried to placate the gods by sacrificing another in its place, and Poseidon was not amused. He planted in Pasiphae's mind a diabolical urge and she fell in love with the creature. She then convinced Daedalus to build a hollow cow for her to hide in and that was how the The Minotaur was conceived. It is thus this keeping of the greater good for one's self which Taurus needs to watch out for.

Power, money, prestige can bind you to the Earth in a way that blinds you to the purpose of life in the first place. Venus herself can become the object of dangerous obsessions if we overstay our time in the sublime that can be found in the union of our self with another. But repression alone is not the answer.

Hand of Fate Taureans need to find a balance between losing ourselves in the sensuality of the world and locking it away like the Minotaur.
